Penny Loafers

George Henry Bass
was the maker of
Norwegian ‘Weejuns’
penny loafers
able to make both
Dean and the King
look cool
as those Ivy League
students too lazy
to find their socks
two pennies
for their thoughts
just enough then
for a phone call home
that Mommy please
guilt dip
into your own
secret stash
send more love
in the form
of a twenty
cause my two
sense
to rub together
is gone.

Early Riser

Thousands
of mornings
have started the same
where you sleep warm
and yet
I rise
the quiet day
nudging me
with gentle thoughts
forcefully pulling
my covers off
and yet
I don’t feel
like rhyming today
where rules
must count
and lines
be broken
so the naked
truth
must spill
or spray
or drip
and dry
until my secret’s
clean
and the mist
of it
forms in the steam
and yet again
I trace
my heart
on the mirror
cold
while in your dreams
you must decide
if you’ll wake
in time
to see.

Scales of Justice

Rain can fool you.

It trickles softly
those secret licks that tease
your face into titling
ever upward tempting
beguiling moisture
that your dryness
lusts for.

Only to be drenched
when the floodgates open.

My tears and the rain
the same.

Just a Day at the Beach

Grandma told me
vanity is a sin
of many single women
while I was innocently
unaware that my uncle
had a secret
till the heat of the day
forced him to reveal
what was under
the covering
of his social deceit
and I couldn’t help
looking
his back
covered in hair
and imagined
my aunt
brushing 100
and I suddenly decided
never to marry
and ran to the water
begging forgiveness

Miracle Grow

Her hollowed skin
is potholed
on old bulging
veins,
and when she
wrings her hands,
she breathes
in deep.

Her slow exhale
drips out
every secret
dream
she had.
Till all she is –
is a concave
bowl.

And if only
plants
could thrive
without sun,
she might have
need
for one.
