4/9/2015 – Patricia A. Hawkenson’s Reflections – Pillow Talk

Pillow Talk

I can’t get the job
without experience
and there’s no escape
when I lie
awake
daydreaming
of putting my feet
up in that corner
office
till I call myself
insane
that old catch 22
won’t give me
rest
conflicting
always fighting
the contradictory rules
to move to the white
or to the black squares
to tip the queen
with an evil grin
only to have
a puny pawn
come into play
when I don’t need him
to justify and conceal
my abuse
of power
so I might close
that loophole
by trying to get out
of work
no
it isn’t really
crazy.

4/1/2013 Patricia A. Hawkenson’s Reflections – I Put My Stamp on Upside-Down

I Put My Stamp on Upside-Down

I told her
seeing tomorrow
IS the goal
but then I knew
my comment
trite
and foolish
like a resounding escalator
whirling without a single
willing rider like us
so bravely taking our next step
bogging spatted feet
until we reach the top
only to find our faded postcards
will not be delivered
on this or any upcoming
Saturday
‘cause God forbid
we lose a dime
as it slips between
the steps of time
and we are stranded
when the power
stops.

10/30/2011 – Patricia A. Hawkenson’s Reflections – Don’t Double Dip

Don’t Double Dip

October doors
are closing,
friendly apps
turned off.

November is beguiling.
My fingers curling
eager to be
keyboard warm.

NaNoWriMo looms
its challenge
fighting against
my PA plan.

Dangling
my internal
power cord,
a hypnotic STOP
watch shouts:

Time for me!
