11/19/09 Patricia A. Hawkenson’s Reflections – If You Want to Scare Me
If You Want to Scare Me
Cover my windshield
with mist,
rain that morphs
into torrents,
torrents that flood
into fear,
fear that reminds me
of bloody sockets
where eyes
were lunch
for Hitchcock birds.
Leave me to grope
with my arms out straight,
bump into the chair
in the dark.
Darken my room,
cover my cage,
don’t let me see
the crimson water
streaming out of your
eyes tonight.
Your eyes are left
with empty promises.
Don’t let me see
tonight.

Barbara,
Tks! Always nice when you stop in to read, support, and comment. There is just something about the memory of those birds pecking out eyes. Must be my artist’s need to see and experience everything: light, color, pattern. Don’t know how I’d exist without my eyes – or friends like you who share my love of writing. MUCH appreciated.

We watched The Birds in sixth grade as a fun class activity thingee, and I have never forgiven my teacher for it; those were some of the last truly horrific nightmares I ever had.
…but, on the flipside of that, Neil Gaiman is one of my favorite authors, and I love the Coraline-d portrait!
Anyway, I strongly approve.

TKS, Joseph!
I think a lot of baby boomers were frightened by that film. Funny, it is actually so mild compared to the horror films my daughter watches! I thought the button eyes fit the gutted eye image. I can see, no pun intended, that it may be more difficult to find just the right picture, than just the right words.
